Module 02 · Strategic Planning

Environmental Scan

See the field clearly, funders, peers, and signals.

What this module does

You can't plan against a field you haven't looked at. Module 02 builds the scan that tells you where the money, the partners, and the pressure actually are.

Watch first
The way we think about charity is dead wrong
Dan Pallotta

Sets up the funder landscape your plan has to navigate.

Worked example
HEAL NH, Strategic Plan 2011, 2014, Background.
Externally, there was a national movement to focus obesity prevention strategies on changing policies and environments... The CDC, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, National Convergence Partnership and other organizations released policy and environmental strategy documents in 2008 and 2009. We shifted our focus accordingly. As we endeavored to implement... we recognized that a strain was being placed on available resources... A consultant was hired to conduct a capacity assessment.

What to copy: HEAL named the external shift (national funders moving toward policy + environment work) and the internal strain (capacity stretched) in two short paragraphs. Your Module 02 scan should do the same, what changed outside, what cracked inside, and what you'll do about both.
